Jon founded The Biodiversity Consultancy in 2006 out of a desire to make sustainability workable.
His role as TBC’s Chair is one of strategic support to Robin Mitchell and the senior team. He has instilled a sense of technical rigour and pragmatism across the team and takes a keen interest in our focus on inspiring and skilling up the next generation of biodiversity professionals.
Jon’s specialisms include No Net Loss/Net Positive Impact policy and programme development, biodiversity offsets, and cross-sector partnership and sees No Net Loss as the most effective organising framework to help business, government and civil society move towards sustainability.
He is originally a field ecologist with 20 years’ experience in international biodiversity conservation, including field ornithology, community-based conservation and IUCN Red Listing. He has worked in over 30 countries with the civil society, science, non-government, mining, oil and gas, forestry, government and financial sectors. He has a largely non-OECD focus, particularly in Africa.
Jon was closely involved in the design and implementation of the Rio Tinto biodiversity strategy, the development of IFC Performance Standard 6, and previously worked on cross-sector partnership between Rio Tinto and BirdLife International. Jon speaks fluent French.
