Demystifying corporate investment in nature

Insights from a joint workshop with The Biodiversity Consultancy and the University of Oxford’s Nature Positive Hub

“Our company wants to invest money to support nature recovery, but we don’t know where to start.”

This is a common sentiment shared by many corporates who are increasingly mobilising capital to benefit nature. Some are implementing actions to mitigate their own negative impacts and address nature-related dependencies. Others are partnering with local stakeholders to achieve conservation within landscapes where they operate. However, for many, knowing how these actions all fit in the broader journey towards Nature Positive is a challenge – and this can lead to inefficiencies, compliance risks, or missed opportunities.

With the aim of guiding corporates in investing for positive outcomes for nature, The Biodiversity Consultancy and the University of Oxford convened a workshop to provide practical, science-based support. The draft outputs include a decision tree and taxonomy designed to guide corporate decision making and clarify the appropriate language and principles that can be applied, which will be articulated in a forthcoming publication. These insights aim to provide businesses with the tools and knowledge to make informed, strategic decisions to effectively contribute to nature positive goals.

The workshop was held as part of The Biodiversity Consultancy’s partnership with the University of Oxford, which produces joint research to drive nature positive outcomes for businesses. Previous outcomes have included a conceptual model highlighting the role of business and other stakeholders in contributing to global nature positive goals. Our active contributions to academic literature ensure that our support for companies in managing biodiversity risks is grounded in robust science.
