Guidance to manage and measure regenerative agriculture outcomes efficiently
WBCSD has launched the Business Guidance for Deeper Regeneration, offering insights on measuring the impacts of regenerative agriculture. The Biodiversity Consultancy served as the technical lead for the biodiversity, water and soil chapters.
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) released the Business Guidance for Deeper Regeneration report in May 2024 to enable businesses to measure and manage nature-related outcomes through regenerative agriculture practices.
The Biodiversity Consultancy, as the technical lead partner, contributed to the development of the guidance documents to measure impacts on biodiversity, water and soil. It is part of the broader Regenerative Agriculture Metrics (RAM) working group initiative spearheaded by WBCSD.
As the world continues to struggle to address the intertwined crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, the need for a coordinated approach to ensure supply chain resilience and transition to agricultural models that operate within planetary boundaries grows.
Regenerative agriculture is gaining traction as a solution to address climate challenges and biodiversity loss while improving soil health. While the private sector is increasingly recognising its positive impact on value resilience, establishing standard definitions and metrics to measure the impacts has been a challenge.
The chapters of the report provide a framework and offer guidance for businesses to measure outcomes of regenerative agriculture, focusing on metrics for biodiversity, water, soil, climate and livelihoods. In this guidance document, biodiversity metrics have been developed to focus on ecological integrity, cultivated biodiversity and pesticide risk.
The approaches suggested in the documents will support food system actors by integrating socio-cultural, environmental, and economic outcomes into their measurement practices.
The framework is expected to enhance transparency, boost investor confidence, and promote effective outcomes for nature.
