The Biodiversity Consultancy's support in shaping the Nexus Assessment

17 December 2024

The Biodiversity Consultancy has been actively involved in synthesising integrated approaches to address challenges related to nature and ecosystem services.

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) launched its Nexus Assessment report on December 17, 2024, during the eleventh IPBES plenary session in Windhoek, Namibia. The report provides an innovative perspective on the interconnectedness of biodiversity, water, food, health, and climate change, calling for a unified approach to these global challenges.

Dr Graham Prescott, part of The Biodiversity Consultancy’s science and innovation team, have actively contributed to shaping the assessment, which highlights the need for integrated, adaptive decision-making to address the complexities of global biodiversity and ecosystem services crises.

The Nexus Assessment highlights the importance of holistic governance frameworks that improve outcomes across biodiversity, water, food, and health sectors, and it calls attention to the risks of inaction and fragmented approaches. It also aligns with global initiatives, including the Sustainable Development Goals, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and the Paris Agreement. This assessment, developed over three years by 165 experts from 57 countries provides over 6,500 scientific references and offers actionable strategies to mitigate global crises while creating benefits across multiple sectors. It serves as an important resource for governments, businesses, civil society, and local communities seeking integrated solutions and action plans.
